Category Archives: Getting started
I just got my first review on Amazon by someone I do not know in the least. What I mean is sure, my friends loved my story and left me good ratings and feedback. I also have some great people I met through here and Facebook that left good reviews and I love them for that. However, this is a total stranger. She wrote….well heck, I’ll quote it here and by the way, it’s for Peaceable Kingdom.
I generally don’t read this type of thing but I figured I could hack a few pages just to see how it has such high reviews. oh wow! that’s all I can say. I never imagined that ending. sure it was a touch on the crude side but whatever, it was a good read that will stick with you.
Now how cool is that? I love that someone left a good review and it wasn’t someone that may feel obligated or my be biased simply because they know me. Then again, maybe my friends that haven’t left a review are the ones that didn’t like it. Either way, I’m thrilled!
Now if I can just get this new story to flesh out like I want it. I read something by a great author. He basically said that the qualities of a great writer are (1) that you can think up a great story and (2) that you can execute it. I can think up some great stuff but it’s the execution that is hard for me. I know what I want it to say but making it pan out right is the hard part. Hey, I’m learning though. 🙂
I had a wonderful friend, who is also a writer, look at my rough draft and she had some great constructive criticism. It also gave me a few ideas as well as it allowed me to see where the holes were in my story. I’m so glad she looked at it because it sure needs work. However, I think the premise is great, I just need to work on the execution. It may be a little while till I get back to it but now I have clear direction on which way to move forward and that kind of advice is priceless.
I have a rough draft of my new story but I think I’ll let a couple of people read it before I do anything with it. What I’d love to do is submit it to some kind of anthology. That’s my dream – to be in something like Hot Blood or some kind of horror anthology. I can’t say what kind of anthology or I’d give away the ending. Anyway, if one of you wants to read the rough draft just let me know and keep in mind, it’s not done. However, at least you’ll have the general idea and can give me some constructive criticism. Right now, the name is The Bunker.
I fixed the weird thing that was happening with my blog where when accessed, it would open up a member’s area link. It seems I had used the URL to the site instead of my library link area. At least it’s all ready now and good to go. With that said, I have an idea for a new story. I will obviously need to flesh it out but I am liking what it will be so far. In fact, I haven’t been this excited over one of my ideas in quite some time but let’s see where it goes. The only clue I’ll give is that, oh wait…that’d ruin the ending, my clue. Okay so no hints for now but I think it’ll be liked.
I’m trying to keep this as real as possible for those of you just like me. Maybe you have a story or two or even a book, you work a regular job and don’t have many connections, and so on. When I first got on Facebook I made friends with some of the authors I admired. Now in my opinion there are three groups of celebrities on Facebook:
- Those that just have a fan page. These people don’t interact much or maybe just once in a while.
- Those that friend you and that’s the last time you hear from them. Nothing wrong with that and at least they added you, which is pretty cool.
- Those that go out of their way to be as nice as possible. These people are awesome. They friend you, they talk to you and they genuinely treat you as a friend.
One of the first people I met as an author and a friend is Ray Garton. Nicest guy you’ll meet and if you love horror you should totally check out his work. We don’t always agree on everything but he has always been more than polite about it and I hope I’m allowed to call him a friend even if we’ve never met in person. Some of my other author friends I actually play games with like Words with Friends. I mean really, how cool is that?
My point is, many authors are like you and me. They’re nice, they play games, they have viewpoints you may not agree with, they have problems like you and me and they have incredible talent. I only hope that one day someone wants to add me as a friend because they loved what I wrote.
Guess who got in? Okay, so it’s not official till I pay my dues after I get the final paperwork but I was emailed today and welcomed as an affiliate member! I’m so excited. I’ll be listed as Kim Hill and my pen name of Shauna Klein so you can find me either way once everything is totally done.
I feel really good about this because you don’t just join. There is certain criteria you have to meet and then be approved to join the HWA. I may not have much out there yet but this is a great way of being involved with awesome writers that I look up to.
Once I’m up on the site and everything is totally final then I’ll provide a link but I couldn’t keep this a secret!
I’ve always loved horror. From movies to books and whatever I could find, I devoured it. I have also always loved writing. Believe me, I have some horrible poetry that is horror related. Something about the hounds of hell, I kid you not. Perhaps one day I can get over my embarrassment and post them here. Then again, maybe not.
I actually got started because a friend of mine that I met via Facebook has a publishing company and had a contest for a flash fiction piece. Grave Demand Publishing ended up being the motivation that gave birth to Peaceable Kingdom. However, I got ahead of myself and published it not realizing that they would need the publishing rights so I lost out on being a part of that. However, Vincent Daemon, a great writer, read my story and liked it so that gave me hope. Since then, I’ve asked a few awesome writers to read my story but that’s going to go in another post about me pimping my stories out.
That’s it for now, although I have plenty to say and can usually never shut up, just ask my friend Melissa about how narcissistic I can be without meaning to.
By the way, I only have two short stories out there right now and yeah, that’s nothing in the grand scheme of things but I’m proud of my two stories and while life gets in the way sometimes, I promise to write more. Honestly, I have too many crazy ideas floating in my head not to spread the joy around! (that was a joke, people)
